Pep Guardiola hailed Sergio Aguero’s first Premier League goal in more than a year as City secured a comfortable 3-0 win at Fulham to go 17 points clear at the top of the table.

After a long period, which has seen him afflicted by injury and illness, our all-time record scorer struck a second half penalty to add to earlier goals from John Stones and Gabriel Jesus at Craven Cottage.

It was Kun’s first league strike since January 2020 – and helped secure our 23rd win from the past 24 games.

And as he reflected on our latest success, the City boss said seeing Aguero back on the scoresheet was so important both for our all-time record goal scorer and the team.

“Of course it’s important. For him goals are everything, Gabriel too,” Guardiola declared.

“Everybody wants to jump on the bus – he is more than welcome!

“It was so important his goal - he played 90 minutes for the first time in a long time.

“They are a tough side, very physical. It was not easy for the guys, we were patient and incredibly solid in behind. We didn’t concede set pieces.

“All 11 players and (substitutes) Fernandinho and Eric (Garcia) - all of them were fantastic.”

The victory kick-started a crucial week which also sees us travel to Hungary on Tuesday to tackle Borussia Monchengladbach in our Champions League last 16 second leg tie before we visit Everton in next Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final.

And the boss said he was delighted at the manner of our display against a Fulham side who had been in very impressive form of late.

“It was an important, brilliant victory,” Guardiola added.

“In general, the game was really good, in a tough stadium. They arrived here in top form, they won at Anfield and have conceded few goals. They create chances. We controlled them well.

“We knew we had three games in three different competitions.

“We have eight games left now in Premier League and now we focus on the Champions League.”
