Pep Guardiola says he will make a decision on John Stones, Matheus Nunes and Ederson’s selection against Everton following our final two training sessions ahead of the Boxing Day encounter.

City welcome the Toffees to the Etihad Stadium on Thursday 26 December with kick-off set for 12:30 (UK).

Stones returned to the starting XI for our Premier League clash with Aston Villa but was brought off at half-time, with Guardiola admitting the defender had felt a disturbance as the break approached.

Ederson and Nunes, meanwhile, weren’t part of the squad at Villa Park and the boss said each will be assessed when the team trains this afternoon and Wednesday evening.

“I didn’t talk with the doctors but if he could not play the second half at Villa Park it is because he wasn’t ready. We’ll see,” the boss responded when asked about Stones’ condition.

On Ederson and Nunes, he added: “We train this afternoon and will see how many players we have available.

“At the moment, I don’t know.

“We train today and we train tomorrow night, and then we stay here and then play on Boxing Day.

“Tonight and tomorrow, they will be with their families. Tomorrow night they will be here. Hopefully they want to be here - it is our job.”

Guardiola also reiterated his respect for Everton boss Sean Dyche and the work he has done over his Premier League managerial career.

The Toffees sit 15th in the table but have the joint-highest clean sheets in the top flight this season, holding both Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks to goalless draws.

Asked whether the boss had discovered a new appreciation for Dyche and other managers’ work following City’s difficult run of form, Guardiola insisted that his admiration has always been present.

“I don’t need to live in this situation to admire and appreciate the challenges of every club,” he continued.

“Every manager at a club has one target. Maybe one day Sean Dyche will manage a big, big club and it will be another challenge.

“It doesn’t mean when he was at Burnley, now at Everton and doing what he has done [wasn’t good]. You give them a lot of credit.

“I don’t discredit the other teams for what they have done, ever.”
