Pep Guardiola said he was satisfied with City’s general performance in the defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford – but admitted his side were undone by two opportune moments from the host.

City dominated the ball, registering 72 per cent of possession, and created several clear-cut chances, with some profligate finishing denying us a route back into the game.

And Sergio Aguero had a goal ruled out for offside after a VAR check, a decision that looked marginal at best.

Two uncharacteristic mistakes from Ederson led to United’s goals, and the decision to award United a free-kick that led to United’s opener was questionable.

But Guardiola refused to make excuses, instead praising United’s performance and reminding his players of the fine margins that determine top-level matches.

“In general, we played very well,” he said.

“In general, I’m satisfied. We are not far away from our previous levels.

“In this type of game, little mistakes can make all the difference. We played good.

“We conceded a goal and should have avoided it, but in the second half we played good as well. So congratulations to Manchester United. The quality of the opponent always counts. We played good. Yes, we could have played better if we won 5-0.”

Guardiola was quick to defend Ederson in the aftermath of the game, describing him as an exceptional goalkeeper.

The Brazilian has been superb since signing for City in 2017, bringing a new dynamic to our game and playing a central role in a glittering period of success for the Club.

The manager was philosophical in his appraisal of Ederson, saying mistakes will happen given the high-risk style we play.

“He saved one or two, he’s an exceptional goalkeeper,” he said.

“I don’t come to judge my players, mistakes are part of the game.

“He will recover and is an exceptional goalkeeper.

“He’s an extraordinary keeper. That’s the only thing I can say.

“It’s part of the game so next time he’s going to be better.

“He’s an extraordinary player. The way we needed the build-up, sometimes it happens.”
