A City side showing 10 changes from Wednesday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Nottingham Forest produced a magnificent all-round display.
Though Harvey Barnes struck early to fire Newcastle ahead, City summoned up a superb response.
Player of the match Savinho claimed an unlikely equaliser six minutes before the break, the ball going in off his standing leg via a Jeremy Doku cross that eluded the Newcastle back line.
Omar Mamroush then took centre stage after half-time, netting a second half brace to ensure City reached the last eight for a ninth time in Pep’s incredible Etihad reign and eighth successive season.
And for the manager it was an extra special performance.
“It’s the best game we have played against Newcastle in my period here in ten years,” the City boss declared.
“Really pleased because the game against Nottingham Forest we were disappointed.
“[So] I’m really pleased with how we played, how we behaved, offensively, defensively
“We will be in the draw on Monday.
“It’s many years since we are there and that is so good.
“[It’s] Eight times in a row we are in the quarter-finals, this organisation is top.”
The boss also had warm words of praise for Marmoush.
The City striker’s brace continued the Egyptian’s magnificent individual record against Newcastle taking his tally to seven goals in 13 months against the Magpies.
“I had the feeling that he scored a lot of times against them,” the boss added.
“He’s a top striker and the finishing, especially our second goal and our third is his biggest quality.
“He has to improve in small spaces and his first control but he deserved it.”
