Pep Guardiola says Abdukodir Khusanov has already proved a ‘top signing’ for City and says the young defender is only going to go from strength to strength.

The Uzbek international joined City 12 months ago from French side RC Lens and the 21-year-old immediately impressed with his pace, physicality and rich potential.

But as he adapted to the challenges of life in a new country, a new league and having to learn a new language, Khusanov has had to be patient in terms of being afforded regular game time.

However, with both Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias sidelined through injury for an extended period of time, Khusanov has started our last two games, catching the eye both in our 1-1 Premier League draw with Brighton and last Saturday’s record-equalling 10-1 FA Cup demolition of Exeter.

Addressing the media ahead of Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg away at Newcastle, the City manager made plain his admiration for the way Khusanov has adapted over the past 12 months.

And given his young age and vast potential, Guardiola said he was in no doubt there was even more to come from Khusanov as he continued his City development.

“He is a top signing,” Guardiola declared.

“In the high level he played in France for five months before here so it’s not easy coming here, but I think he is a special player.

“He helps a lot because we play so high, and the positions in behind he handles it really well.

“He loves these kinds of actions.

“Step by step, we need him in the process on the ball, he will learn as he is so young.

“He is so coachable, he is always training good and gives 100%.

“I think he is faster and faster. He was a fast player and nothing changed, he is so reliable.

“I said last year the club made a good decision for him.

“If he was in the market, the top ten clubs would want him because he has a unique quality and special attributes as a defender which are so difficult to find.

“He speaks quite decent English. He understands things quickly

“To make a step up we’d say okay, he’s maybe better than he believes, and always I encourage him that he is really, really good.

“He has long passes, he breaks lines really good, has incredible pace with the pass, just to have more courage to do it, but that’s just a question of time.

“He’s so young, as much as he plays, he’ll get it.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow night’s game the boss also confirmed that James Trafford would again start in goal with the 23-year-old having also figured in last Saturday’s FA Cup win over Exeter.

The goalkeeper – who joined City from Burnley last summer - has had to be patient for opportunities this season with Gianluigi Donnarumma, who also moved to City in the summer window, starting the majority of Premier League games.

However, Guardiola was at pains to praise Trafford’s attitude and mindset alongside his huge natural talent.

“He’s reacted really well. No complaints,” Pep added.

“James is a top keeper. There is no doubt about that

“I understand the situation; the keeper situation is completely special.

“It’s play one or the other one, it’s not like some players who you can play in different positions.”
