Pep Guardiola believes Phil Foden has improved considerably since his man-of-the-match performance in last season’s Carabao Cup final.

The Academy graduate produced a sensational display as we beat Aston Villa to win our third-straight Carabao Cup in March 2020.

It felt like a coming-of-age performance from a young player developing into a potential star.

But this season has seen him reach new heights. Foden has become a key player for City, scoring 14 goals and assisting a further nine in 43 games across all competitions.

And ahead of this year’s final, Guardiola says he is developing all the time, both physically and mentally, but believes there’s plenty of room for improvement.

“He played more minutes and when you play more minutes you are a better player,” Guardiola said.

“He was a boy when I arrived, training every day with these guys and now he plays important minutes.

“He is stronger physically. He can get stronger.

“He plays more minutes, knows the game better and can play more positions.

“He is a better player but he can still be better.”

Meanwhile, Guardiola says City are ready for Sunday’s Wembley showdown with Tottenham.

Talk across the football world has been dominated this week by the proposed European Super League, which has now been cancelled.

But Guardiola says City’s professional performance away at Aston Villa on Wednesday, which saw us win and move a step closer to winning our third Premier League title in four seasons, was evidence his players are focused on results.

“The game at Aston Villa showed we are ready and we will be ready on Sunday,” he said.

“There’s a new manager and we watched the Southampton game but it is only one game, so we don’t know if there is a pattern.”
