Pep Guardiola says City will take the positives from the Carabao Cup clash against Newcastle and quickly move onto this weekend’s Premier League game with Wolves.

The boss made eight changes to his starting line-up in the narrow 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park with many players given a rest after a hectic start.

While the result was disappointing, Guardiola was happy with many aspects of the performance ahead of the game at Molineux on Saturday at 15:00 (UK).

“The game was really good,” he said. “In the Carabao Cup, you make a statement by winning it four times in a row like no team has done before, but we went out.

“In the first half they had a good rhythm but we could not do it in the second half. That is football.

“You win games you lose games. We were disappointed the day after but now we focus on the next one.”

WOLVES V CITY | MATCH PREVIEW

City are looking to our extend our 100% start in the Premier League to seven matches after a perfect beginning to the season.

However, our opponents are also desperate for points, sitting just three points above the relegation zone six game into the campaign.

Gary O’Neil’s side have played just twice at home this season, losing to second-placed Liverpool and third-placed Brighton, and Guardiola saw enough in those matches to know they will be a huge threat.

Asked if it was an easy game for his side, the boss said: “Normally all the games we play are easy - if we don’t win the Premier League by 10 points in November it is a disaster!

“I have incredible respect for Wolves and when you see the quality they have especially up front with [Pedro] Neto with [Matheus] Cunha, with Hwang Hee-Chan - Lamina is a top player.

“The manager O’Neil had a good season at Bournemouth and I have feeling they will do it again too.

“Against Brighton, the chances they missed and against Liverpool. The chances they have to score, the quality is there. Hopefully we can respond before the international break.”

In his pre-match press conference, Guardiola said that he will be without the injured Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne, while Rodrigo is suspended.

The Spain midfielder has been a key figure in recent seasons and while he said other players have different qualities, the gameplan will remain the same.

Questioned whether City might try a different style, he replied: “No. I want to try to do a similar thing to what we have done in recent years, and I would say it is not bad.”
