Ederson may return from self-isolation before Sunday’s clash with Birmingham City and whilst Guardiola admits he remains the Club’s No.1, the manager has been impressed with Steffen’s performances.

“He can fight for No.1,” said the City boss.

“He can put pressure on Eddie, but Eddie is the No.1 in this position right now. If he performs well, he stays No.1.

“But we cannot forget he [Steffen] played at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford and solved all the situations he faced brilliantly.”

Guardiola also had a note of praise for the on-loan Scott Carson, revealing the experienced third choice goalkeeper is one of City’s dressing room leaders.

Scott Carson is like our captain behind the scenes,” he added.

“It’s not noticed in the papers or on the field but in the locker room he is like another captain. Hopefully he can stay longer with us.”

City’s steely defence has been one of the outstanding aspects of this season, with summer signing Ruben Dias making a seamless transition to bolster our back four.

The Portugal international is proving himself to be a be a real leader in the team and Guardiola has been delighted with the impact of a player he has found to be a dedicated professional.

“The player who influences the team and is important in the team is the player who can play every three days,” Guardiola explained.

“The quality is there, but if a player gets injured every few weeks, that is not good for the team.

“When you buy players you know their quality but don’t know if they can play every three days, but he recovers immediately.

“His ability is incredible. He wants to learn. All of us are impressed with how he takes care of his body and his mind.

“The day after a game he is in the gym at 8:30 in the morning. He lives his profession 24-hours a day.

“I can assure you we have signed an incredible player for the next years. And it is not easy to find that.

“That’s why we are so fortunate. Hopefully he can continue at this level.”
