Man-of-the-match Phil Foden has described his Carabao Cup final experience as “unbelievable”.

The 19-year-old produced a virtuoso display at Wembley, setting up Sergio Aguero’s opener with a beautifully cushioned header before orchestrating our best attacking moments.

He says he found out he would start the game during Saturday’s training session - and heaped praise on Aston Villa after their spirited performance.

“[I found out I would start] the day before, in training, when the manager was working on tactics,” he said.

“I couldn’t wait to play. It was an unbelievable day.

“I have to say fair play to Aston Villa, they gave us a really good game.”

It was Foden’s 25th appearance of the season and arguably his best in a City shirt to date.

The calls for him to start more regularly are likely to increase again – but he says with the quality in the squad he is prepared to bide his time and learn from those around him.

“When I play, every minute counts, so I try and do my best and I’m very proud of my performance today,” he said.

“You look at players like Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva, who are great, so when I get into the team I have to make the most of it.”
