Raheem Sterling says working with Pep Guardiola has taught him the importance of continually striving to improve.

The Manchester City winger has gone from strength to strength since Guardiola arrived at the Club in the summer of 2016 and earlier this month he became only the third player to score a century goals for the Catalan.

An influential figure in a City side which has lifted eight trophies in the last three years, Sterling believes Guardiola has instilled a winner’s attitude in his players and the 26-year-old says working under one of the game’s most successful managers has taught him never to rest on his laurels.

“Just that winning mentality,” said Sterling when asked how Guardiola had helped his team.

“That is the thing I have learnt most from him and to not be content with what you have done and keep grinding, keep getting better and try to win more and more.”

Sterling scored the only goal of the game as City’s winning run extended to 18 games with victory at Arsenal.

Guardiola’s side are now 10-points clear at the top of the league, but our No.7 is taking nothing for granted.

With our Champions League campaign set to resume, the England international admits we are approaching a critical point in the season, but explained City will continue to take a one game at a time approach as he echoed a message his manager has reiterated throughout the campaign.

“It is still early days and we still have massive games coming up, but we keep our focus and go again,” added Sterling.

“We won’t get ahead of ourselves and we still know it is a long season to go. The Champions League is coming now so it is an important part of the season.

“We will just keep our focus and go into the Champions League game this week, then after that the Premier League game. We will take it step by step and not get ahead of ourselves.

“There are fantastic teams in the league this season. All of the other teams have been grinding out results.

“We have just got to focus on ourselves and that is the most important thing. We are in control of our own destiny. Hopefully, it all works out well.”
