The England winger had opened the scoring in the 17th minute with yet another goal on the road, jinking his way through the hosts’ defence from the left wing before finding the far corner of Illan Meslier’s net.
But we were unable to extend our lead, and were pegged back by an instinctive Rodrigo effort after Ederson could not claim the ball from a corner just before the hour.
Despite not picking up the win, Sterling was proud of City’s performance, and admitted he relishes taking on a side that play with as much of a high tempo as Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds.
“They were right in our faces,” he reflected after the draw at Elland Road.
“I prefer playing against teams like that instead of 11 men behind the ball.
“It was a difficult game. The energy levels from start to finish were impressive.”
With several notable names missing for City, it would be a fair assessment to say that Pep Guardiola’s squad has been stretched relatively thin in the opening weeks of the new season.
We were, however, boosted by the return of Bernardo Silva and John Stones for our trip to Elland Road, and the international break will also provide an opportunity for the squad to rest and regroup.
And while Sterling was quick to praise the team’s efforts so far this campaign, he feels we can come back stronger after the break.
He said: ”We’ve done fantastic with the short squad that we have had and after the international break, we should have a fit squad and ready to go.”
“There were a few setbacks that we’ve had like injuries. (But) I think we’ve done well.”
