Pep Guardiola’s men made it two wins from two in our defence of Europe’s elite competition, beating RB Leipzig 3-1 in Germany.
An impressive team move saw Phil Foden hand us a deserved lead before the 25-minute mark, but the hosts struck back through Lois Openda.
However, substitutes Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku both struck late on to seal the victory for City.

Flying full-back
“He is an amazing, outstanding player,” was the assessment Pep Guardiola gave to TNT Sport when asked about Rico Lewis’ performance in Germany.
The defender showed a typical level of composure far beyond his tender years to help City over the line in just his 29th senior appearance in all competitions.
He was particularly instrumental in our opening goal, cutting the ball back into the path of Foden for the England international to sweep home.
At just 18 years and 317 days, it ensured Lewis became the youngest City player to get an assist in the Champions League.
The goal sequence below shows the intricate passage of play which led to Rico’s latest milestone...
16 not out
City’s last defeat in the Champions League came on 4 May 2022, a run which stretches across an incredible 16 matches.
It means Pep Guardiola’s men have now equalled the longest European unbeaten run by an English club in history.
We share the honour with Don Revie’s Leeds United (1967-68), Bill Nicholson’s Tottenham side (1967-72) and Chelsea, under Maurizio Sarri and Frank Lampard (2018-19).
West Ham United have also gone 16 European matches unbeaten ahead of their Europa League clash with SC Freiburg this evening.
Impact from the bench
Alvarez has become a key figure for City so far in 2023/24 and continued his fine form with a stunning strike against RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening.
The Argentine then laid on for fellow substitute Doku to seal the win, with the pair earning a goal and an assist each despite both being introduced after the 70-minute mark.
For Alvarez, his goal was just his sixth touch of the ball, while our winger was able to open his account in Europe’s elite competition.
A memorable night all round for the attacking duo!
