We will host the defending champions on Tuesday 11 February, before travelling to Madrid for the second leg on Wednesday 19 February. Both matches will kick-off at 20:00 (UK).
We are in this round having finished 22nd in the league phase of the competition’s new format, with all sides from ninth to 24th playing for the right to join the top eight in the Round of 16.
Going into Friday’s draw in Nyon, we knew our opponents would be one of Real Madrid or Bayern Munich due to their 11th and 12th place finishes respectively.
However, it’s the Spanish side we’ll play next month.
It will be the fifth two-legged tie between the two clubs in the last six seasons, with both sides progressing through two of the previous four stretching back to 2019/20.
Last season’s meeting ended in a penalty shootout at the Etihad, with Real coming through and eventually going on to lift the trophy itself.
The 2022/23 campaign saw us demolish Real at the Etihad at the semi-final stage in one of the greatest European nights in the Club’s history on the way to winning an historic Treble.
Overall, we have won four matches, drawn five and lost three against the 15-time European champions.
The winner of this tie will face either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen in the Round of 16. That will be decided in a draw on 21 February.
