Sergio Aguero says Wednesday’s Round of 16 first leg game against Read Madrid is a reminder that the Club has already come close to winning the competition on one occasion.

The La Liga giants were the side who narrowly knocked City out at the semi-final stage in 2016, edging through with a 1-0 aggregate on their way to winning the trophy.

Since then, there have been a further two quarter-final appearances that both resulted in defeats to English sides - Liverpool and Tottenham – and each time, both Premier League sides went on to be losing finalists.

Agüero is hopeful those past experiences can now help City knock-out the most successful Champions League side of all – Real Madrid.

“I believe all these years have been a learning experience for us,” said Aguero.

“We have to remember that City didn’t begin to participate in this competition until 2011, but now we are able to be a challenger.

“As I say, each campaign, we acquire more experience and learn new things.

“Of course, I’d be very happy to win it this season and I hope it’s in the cards, but it will be difficult.”

City’s top scorer with 21 goals so far, admits winning the Premier League and Champions League remains is a huge ask for any team.

Reaching the last eight for the past two years despite dominating the Premier League bear testament to how difficult winning both is.

“Both are different competitions, and they are both great challenges,” he said.

“I’ve always said, the Premier League is the most competitive national tournament of them all, and if you intend to win it, you need to keep a steady stride throughout.

“These are some of the reasons why it’s hard to be successful in both tournaments.

“For the Premier League, consistency throughout a long period of time is required, though you have some margin to recover from a setback.

“The Champions League doesn’t offer that - and it’s even less forgiving in the knockout phase, as the decisive factor over two legs can come down to technicalities - our last experience against Tottenham is a testament to that.

“For the past two years, we’ve been able to win the Premier League in different ways - once, with a generous lead; once, with the bare minimum.

“Last season proved just how tough a challenge it is.

“Perhaps right now it’s not as clear, but as time goes on, what we’ve achieved will be clearer when we look back over our achievements.”
