Rico Lewis says earning the respect of his fellow professionals is more important to him than the trophies he may win in his career.

The 18-year-old Academy graduate made his senior debut for the Club last August before playing a key role in Pep Guardiola’s squad as we went on to win the Treble.

The youngster is the latest guest on our Official Man City Podcast, covering his story as the son of a boxing trainer in Radcliffe who is now a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup winner.

Despite his tender years, Lewis has already lifted more silverware than many players do throughout their career.

However, the full-back is more focused on being valued by his team-mates and City’s fans.

He cites Ilkay Gundogan’s impact on him in his early days with the first team as an example he wants to follow.

“My goals have never been to win trophies, it’s to be someone who people look to in the team,” said Lewis.

“I looked up to Gundogan, who was amazing last year. A lot of the players, even the older players, looked up to him because he was reliable in the team.

“I know I played my role but I’m talking like Gundo last year, he was so important to how we played in nearly every game. Rodrigo pretty much played every game.

“In the middle of the season when I was playing a lot more people were happy to see me there but at the start of the season it was a shock to everyone. Being a regular will come with time, I hope.”

Since stepping up to senior football after captaining our Under-18s to the Premier League title in 2021/22, Lewis has been showered with praise by many of the most influential figures in the game.

Not least his own manager, who has repeatedly told media of the youngster’s enthusiasm and ability to retain new information.

That serves as excellent inspiration to our young defender.

“It means more than anything to me to get praise from someone like Pep,” he said.

“I have watched him coach for years so for him to be talking about me, it doesn’t really make sense. I like it and it’s fuel to do more and get better.”

While winning a Treble had long been a dream for City fans, including Lewis, the youngster says he was always confident we would go on to achieve last season’s successes.

“At the start of the season I thought we were going to win the Treble. I told my dad, I told everyone. It’s easy to say that now but I actually did think we would,” he said.

“It’s amazing to win it but for myself, I’d like to be more a part of it in the future.”
