Algeria had already booked their place at next year’s tournament in Cameroon, but produced a dominant display in their final qualifying match and their talismanic skipper was at the heart of it as he completed 90 minutes at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker.
The home side took the lead when Medhi Zeffane fired in on the rebound after Mahrez had seen his 25-yard free-kick saved and he then turned provider for Sofiane Feghouli, whose glancing header made it 2-0 after some trademark trickery from City’s No.26.
Mahrez added a third from the penalty spot, picking out the top corner to net his 19th international goal in 62 appearances before Baghadad Bounedjah and Farid Boulaya completed the rout.
Algeria finished top of Group H, with four wins and two draws from their six games, with the City winger scoring three times in the qualifying campaign.
