Riyad Mahrez said City’s excellent 4-1 Carabao Cup quarter-final win at Arsenal was a timely reminder of City’s potent prowess in front of goal.

Having broken goal scoring records galore in previous seasons, Pep Guardiola’s side have found goals much harder to come by so far this term.

However, Mahez struck a second half free-kick at the Emirates with Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden and Aymeric Laporte also on target to fire us into the semi-finals.

And the Algerian said he was confident it was the shape of things to come for the squad.

“We’ve been struggling but it’s football. I think we’re going to come back, it’s not easy to score four or five goals even if that’s always been our standard,” the Algerian insisted.

“Today we score four goals, concede one, I think it was a solid performance today.

“We started good and then they equalised and then in the second half we scored with the lucky free kick and got the third one and it was easier after.”

Mahrez’s setpiece strike restored City’s lead and set us on the way to a comprehensive win.

There was an element of fortune about the goal though with the ball going through the hands of Arsenal keeper Runar Runarsson.

And Mahrez admitted he was surprised by the positioning of the Icelandic shot-stopper.

“I was surprised by the position of the keeper, he was so close to the post,” Mahrez revealed.

“I thought he was going to move a bit that’s why I put it there, but he didn’t move. But luckily, he didn’t catch it properly, it was good for us.”
