Scott Carson says he feels a key part of his role at City is to help Ederson and Stefan Ortega Moreno as much as possible.

The goalkeeper has signed a one-year contract extension, taking him to the end of the 2023/24 season.

Carson first joined the Club in 2019 on loan from Derby County and signed on a permanent transfer in 2021.

Since then, he has been integral part of the dressing room during the sustained success under Pep Guardiola.

Speaking to the Official Man City Podcast recently, he stated clearly how he sees his contribution to the side.

“I’m the third choice goalkeeper. I think it’s half of my job role to help the lads if they need anything,” he said.

“The other two lads are playing a lot more games than me and could be called upon at any time so if they want me to do a bit of shooting or crossing I am there to help them.

“If that means I’m there longer, it’s not a massive thing to do. That’s part of my role to be there to do that.”

Guardiola’s first choice goalkeeper throughout Carson’s stint at the Etihad has been Ederson.

The Brazilian international has been central to so much of City’s success in recent seasons and Carson believes the pair have a mutual respect for one another.

“He’s a top fella. I don’t know what goes on in his head sometimes,” said Carson.

“In the first two or three weeks I didn’t have a clue what he was saying and he probably didn’t understand me but after that, he’d say something and I’d just laugh. From then, we just started getting on.

“I like a laugh and a joke but on the training ground he can see how hard I train and that respect that we’ve got for each other is easy for everyone to see.”

At 37, Carson isn’t ready to hang up the gloves yet.

In fact, the former England international believes he is still adding elements to his game as a goalkeeper more than 20 years after turning professional.

He said: “Even now, I think I’ve improved in the last couple of years since I’ve been here. As long as you’ve got that drive when you’re on the training ground then you can go on as long as your body tells you to.”
