The Argentinian had already netted more than 100 goals in a City shirt and won two Premier League titles.
Even with all that prior warning, no one would have predicted he would net five in one 90-minute blitz on the Magpies.
Especially considering Manuel Pellegrini’s came into the game off the back of two league defeats to West Ham and Spurs.
What’s more incredible is that Newcastle took the lead in this one through powerhouse Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The visitors could have been even further ahead in the first half, with another Mitrovic goal being ruled out for offside and Joe Hart making a last ditch starfish stop.
And it wasn’t until the 42nd minute that City replied with Aguero’s first of an unforgettable afternoon.
In isolation it wasn’t the most remarkable finish, with David Silva chipping to Fernandinho who headed across for Aguero to nod in from six yards out for his first goal in five games.
That invigorated the Blues, who came out for the second half a different team.
Aguero put us ahead in the 49th minute, stepping in on his left foot and hitting a shot that was deflected beyond Tim Krul.
And it was three almost immediately, with Aguero latching on to a delicious Kevin De Bruyne through ball and chipping over Krul for his hat-trick.
The Belgian made it four himself with a volley that looped over the goalkeeper but under the bar.
We weren’t done there, with Aguero and Silva again linking up and the former curling a delightful effort inside the far post.
The final gloss was added to the scoreline when Silva and De Bruyne combined for Aguero to rush in at the backpost and nudge it in.
He was only the fifth man in the Premier League era to score five in a single game and remains the latest to do so.
And beyond the football on the pitch, it produced the iconic, almost magical, image that leads this very piece.
