A look at the statistics that point to Sergio Gomez’s style of play.

The 21-year-old Spanish defender has joined from Belgian club Anderlecht, moving to the Etihad Stadium until 2026.

Including his time with the Belgian giants, Gomez has already represented some of the biggest clubs in Europe. He began his career with FC Barcelona, where he played at second team level before moving to Borussia Dortmund in January 2018.

After turning out for Borussia Dortmund II in 2017/18 and 2018/19, he moved on loan to Spanish club SD Huesca in the Segunda Division. After Huesca’s promotion was sealed, he signed for another season-long loan for 2020/21.

After their relegation, he made the move to Anderlecht, where he played 49 times in 2021/22 under the guidance of former City skipper Vincent Kompany.

Here we take a look at the numbers that have made his career so far…

ASSIST MAKER

Gomez’s attacking intent from left-back is immediately obvious when you compare his assist record in the 2021/22 Jupiler Pro League with the rest of the players in the division.

According to FBref, the Catalan laid on 11 goals for his team-mates, the fourth most of any player in the division – behind only attacking players Xavier Mercier, Noa Lang and Junya Ito.

He made a total of 65 chances, according to FotMob, so could well have ended up with more assists to his name.

CROSS KING

A key part of his role in Anderlecht’s team in 2021/22 was to attack the byline and deliver crosses with his left foot.

That is borne out by the 284 crosses he accumulated across the campaign, which was more than any other player in the competition.

With Erling Haaland, Julian Alvarez and others ready to attack any ball that comes into the box, they will be licking their lips at Gomez’s arrival.

TAKE YOUR SHOT

In modern football, full-backs are often asked to contribute to the attack in a range of ways. For our new signing, that means both teeing up his colleagues and taking a shot on himself.

He averaged 1.3 shots per match last season and scored on six occasions in the league, including one match-winning brace against Sporting Charleroi.

That is by far his most productive season in front of goal, having previously managed two for Borussia Dortmund II in 2018/19 while still a teenager and one in his first year with Huesca.

UP TO THE MARK

Gomez was one of Anderlecht’s chief penalty takers in 2021/22, converting all three of the kicks he took. Gomez shared the job with team-mate Lior Refaelov, who also scored on three separate occasions from the penalty spot.

Gomez may have competition for the role in City’s squad, especially after Erling Haaland’s emphatic finish at West Ham recently, but with knockout football played across three of the four major trophies it can never harm to have more players confident from 12 yards.

DEFENSIVE DUTIES

It’s clear that Gomez has the attributes to impress for City when we’re in possession.

He is comfortable out of possession too, having made 37 tackles, 34 clearances and 48 interceptions in the top-flight of Belgian football last season.

In the previous season, while playing for struggling Huesca near the bottom of La Liga, he made 28 tackles and 18 interceptions from just four starts and 25 substitute appearances.
