Sergio Aguero missed training due to injury following Manchester City’s draw with West Bromwich Albion, but the striker has since returned and is in contention for Saturday’s trip to Southampton.

Pep Guardiola admitted he is unsure to what extent the striker will be able to be involved against the Saints, but said there were encouraging signs in Friday’s training session.

Aguero played the final 14 minutes in the 1-1 draw with West Brom, his second appearance off the bench following a four-match absence and his fitness has been carefully managed since he suffered a hamstring injury earlier this season following his return from knee surgery.

“I don’t know,” said Guardiola when asked if Aguero is ready for the trip to the South Coast.

“After the game he could not train. Yesterday no training, today he trained really well, but I don’t know how many minutes he can play.

“It’s important he makes training sessions but after the game he could not. It wasn’t the knee, it was another area.”

Asked whether City had any other injury concerns, Guardiola said: “No, we train today. That’s all I can say.”

The City boss also ruled out resting Kevin De Bruyne at St Mary’s.

The Belgian midfielder has played every minute of our previous seven Premier League games and Guardiola suggested that is set to continue on Saturday despite the upcoming busy festive period.

“No, he is so important for us right now that he won’t rest,” added the boss.

“He rested in the Champions League. Right now, we need him.”
