Manchester City have been named Team of the Year at the 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.

The prestigious prize, which was first inaugurated in 1960, recognises the team deemed ‘to have achieved the most notable performance in the calendar year to date’ and is decided on by an expert panel.

By every conceivable metric, City more than met that criteria across the course of what was an extraordinary, record-breaking 12 months capped by the Club’s historic Treble achievement.

Under the guidance of inspirational manager Pep Guardiola, City enjoyed the most successful season in the Club’s long, proud history across the 2022/23 campaign.

City first secured the 2022/23 Premier League title, to claim what was a third successive league crown and fifth title in six years under the leadership of Pep.

That was swiftly followed by the securing of a domestic double, with City beating Manchester United 2-1 at Wembley in what proved a memorable first-ever all-Manchester FA Cup final.

And the most dramatic and successful season in the Club’s 129-year history was then sealed seven days later in early June when City beat Inter of Italy 1-0 in Istanbul to claim our first-ever Champions League title – and so secure the Treble for only the second time in English football.

Along the way, City also posted a series of impressive collective and individual milestones, not least our tally of 150 goals across all competitions – which was more than any other side in Europe.

The silverware didn’t end their either.

In August, the Club then lifted the 2023 UEFA Super Cup after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory against Europa League winners Sevilla in Athens.

City also still have the opportunity to claim one more trophy before the year is out with Pep Guardiola’s side currently out in Saudi Arabia competing in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Success in Jeddah would see City become the first English side to ever lift five trophies in one year.

City have won the award in succession to the England Lionesses who were named BBC Team of the Year in 2022.

“This is such a special prize to win. Everyone knows how important the BBC Sports awards are so to be named Team of the Year means a lot to us all at Manchester City,” club captain Kyle Walker said.

“What we have done in 2023 is something none of us will ever forget and this award is another special way to recognise what we achieved.

“We are so proud of everything we have achieved together. I want to thank everyone connected to Manchester City, too, because without them none of what we have achieved would have been possible.”

It was a memorable night for City with Erling Haaland also named as the 2023 BBC World Sport Star of the Year and Guardiola won Coach of the Year.

Congratulations to Pep and the team from everyone at Manchester City FC on this latest prestigious and deserved award.
