“If anyone has played with me, they know I don’t like taking penalties. I don’t like letting people down if I miss. The gaffer put me as number five, I had to, as captain and for leadership. Thankfully it went in and it was the winning one.
“That’s what good teams do. You capitalise on the other team’s mistakes. We rode it. We got there. The main thing is to come here, it’s in tough conditions.
“To come here with this cup which we worked so hard for and win. To put it in the trophy cabinet for Manchester City, it’s a fantastic feeling.”

City’s captain on the night also reserved plenty of praise for goalscorer and Academy graduate Palmer, who also scored in the Community Shield.
“This guy is incredible,” he said. “He’s got good players to learn off and we’re under the best manager in the world.
“He needs to keep going and keep his feet on the floor which he does really well and keep scoring.
“If he keeps improving and listening to me behind him, he’ll be fine.”
