Palmer has been training with the first team since the Premier League restart in June and was included in the matchday squad on four occasions towards the end of last season.

The teenager has adapted well to his new surroundings, impressing Pep Guardiola who praised him after the 2-1 win over Bournemouth in the previous round.

“We have Cole Palmer who will be an exceptional player,” said the City boss when discussing which young players could help his injury hit squad.

Palmer follows in the footsteps of Liam Delap and his good friends Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood-Bellis as the latest Academy graduate.

Born in Wythenshawe, he joined the Club at under-8s level and progressed through the youth ranks before captaining the under-18s last season.

A technically gifted attacking midfielder who has also been utilised up front, the teenager boasts exceptional technique and a keen eye for goal.

Left-footed and with great awareness, he thrives in the pocket of space between midfield and defence and when in full flight, he glides past opponents.

But, it is Palmer’s goals that have caught the eye in the Academy.

He enjoyed a fine campaign with Gareth Taylor’s league title winning under-18s last season, scoring 15 times and providing five assists in just 14 Under-18 Premier League appearances.

There was more success in the Under-18 Premier League Cup, with Palmer captaining the Academy outfit to a 6-0 win over Stoke City in the final, when he was on target twice.

His form was rewarded when he was invited to train with the first team towards the end of last season and he was named as a substitute for the Champions League games against Real Madrid and Lyon.

Everyone at Manchester City congratulates Cole on his debut and wishes him the best of luck this evening.
