The 17-year-old’s inclusion in the squad comes in the wake of an excellent first half of the season for the central defender with our Elite Development Squad.
Despite only still being 16 at the start of the 2020/21 campaign, Mbete has emerged as one of the key figures in our impressive Under-23 side this term and has thrived under the guidance of head coach Enzo Maresca.
So far this season, Mbete has made 10 appearances in Premier League 2 for our EDS squad as well as also impressing for our Under-21s in the Papa John’s Trophy.

A tall and commanding presence at the heart of our defence, left-footed Mbete is assured and composed in possession and is both tactically astute and confident with the ball and in his distribution.
His elevation to the EDS squad this term followed a fine 2019/20 campaign which saw the England Under-16 international emerge as one of the leading figures in our all-conquering Under-18s squad which lifted both the Under-18 Premier League title and Premier League Under-18 Cup.
Mbete was also an important figure in our 2020 FA Youth Cup triumph, playing a key role in a dramatic 3-2 win over Chelsea in last November’s final at St George’s Park.
Luke also follows in the footsteps of EDS colleagues Cole Palmer, Liam Delap, Tommy Doyle and Taylor Harwood-Bellis in being afforded first team recognition from the Academy ranks.
Born in London, Luke joined the Club at Under-12s level and progressed smoothly through the youth ranks in the intervening years.
Everyone at Manchester City congratulates Luke on his inclusion in the squad and wishes him the best of luck today.
