Manchester City’s Alex Greenwood has been named in the FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11 for 2023.

The defender received the accolade at the prestigious FIFPRO Awards in London on Monday evening.

The England international was up against former City full-back Lucy Bronze, Real Madrid’s Olga Carmona, Arsenal’s Amanda Ilestedt, Chelsea’s Ashley Lawrence as well as Barcelona duo Maria Leon and Irene Paredes in the defender category.

The honour caps off a fantastic 12 months for the centre-half, who has been a central figure in both City and England’s defensive lines.

For City, Greenwood has featured 39 times in all competitions since the start of the 2022/23 season, and was named in the most recent PFA WSL Team of the Year.

She also reached a century of appearances for the Club in October 2023, with her experience and quality essential to our strong showing so far in the current campaign.

On the international front, Greenwood was a commanding leader at the back throughout 2023, helping the Lionesses win the inaugural Finalissima against Brazil at Wembley in April, before travelling to Australia and New Zealand for the World Cup last summer.

Once again, she was a central figure for the European champions Down Under and featured in every match en route to England finishing runners up at the tournament.

“Alex is an important figure for us both on and off the pitch, so it’s great to see her gain further recognition, which she fully deserves,” City boss Gareth Taylor said.

“Her contribution to England’s World Cup campaign and her standout performances for City show the levels she’s consistently hitting, and that’s possible thanks to the incredible work she puts in on a daily basis to keep improving.

“I imagine this will feel particularly special for her given she’s been voted for by her fellow professionals, and it’s another example of the respect she commands in the game.”

City’s Women’s Director of Football Nils Nielsen added: “This is a brilliant moment for Alex to be recognised with such a prestigious award.

“I know that she’s very highly thought of within the Club, and her leadership qualities have been influential in what Gareth is implementing on the pitch.

“She has continued to hit new heights for both City and England across the last 12 months, and I’m sure that will be the same in the years to come.”

Managing Director Charlotte O’Neill continued: “We’re all delighted to see Alex named in the FIFPRO World 11 after another impressive year for Club and Country.

“To be included in such an illustrious list is testament to her reputation as one of the best defenders in the world, and an example of both her quality on the pitch and professionalism off it.

“We’re all excited to see what the future holds for Alex and for City, and I’d like to congratulate her once again on receiving this award.”

Everyone at Manchester City would like to congratulate Alex on this phenomenal achievement.
