The defender was part of the England team who retained their title as European Champions this summer, as they beat Spain on penalties in the Euro 2025 final.
In doing so, the Lionesses made history by successfully defending their crown from 2022 and won a major tournament outside of the United Kingdom – both firsts for an England men’s or women’s side.

Greenwood started all of the Lionesses matches en route to glory in Switzerland, also scoring in the deciding penalty shootout win over La Roja, the reigning World Champions.
She’s also continually helped to drive City forward at club level, putting in remarkably consistent displays after recovering from injury in time to prove her fitness ahead of Euro 2025.
Her return to action in the final weeks leading up to the Christmas period were also a major boost to a City side who signed off for 2025 at the top of the WSL table on the back of a remarkable ten-match winning run.
Those exploits have seen our captain deservedly recognised in the 2026 New Year’s Honours List, with fellow England stars Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway and Ella Toone also receiving MBE’s.
Lionesses captain Leah Williamson has also been appointed a CBE, while England manager Sarina Wiegman becomes an honorary dame.
Joining City in 2020 from French giants OL Lyonnes, Greenwood has gone on to make 154 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, winning the FA Cup and League Cup during that time.
She’s also been included in three PFA WSL Team of the Year squads while at City in 2021/22, 2022/23 and 2023/24.
Assuming the captaincy in 2024 following the retirement of Club legend Steph Houghton, Greenwood agreed to a new contract in November, committing her future to the Club until the summer of 2027.
Everyone at City would like to congratulate Alex on being named an MBE.
