Alex Greenwood believes she is playing the best football of her career and couldn’t wait to get back to training as we count down to the start of the Women’s Super League campaign.

The defender was one of six players named in the PFA Team of the Year earlier this week after an outstanding season in the heart of the City defence.

Gareth Taylor’s squad are currently in Australia at the start of our pre-season tour before the big kick-off against Arsenal on Sunday, September 22.

Before travelling, she sat down with the Official Man City Podcast, and says she is as hungry as ever to be successful on the pitch.

“I think I’m playing the best football of my career for sure,” she said.

“I think that’s why, I’ve just said, I feel like where I am is where I’m meant to be.

“I feel, so comfortable here, but not comfortable in such as I’ve accepted where I am.

“I don’t wake up and go: ‘I can’t improve anymore...’ because if I did that then, I don’t think it’d be where I’m meant to be.

“I have so much more hunger now than when I signed, because I still want to win trophies, and I still want to make this team the best that it can possibly be.

“And, that fire in my belly is still there and I’m, like, in the off-season I can’t wait to get back.

“And I’m excited. I’m excited to meet the new players, I’m excited to see the girls who were here last year. I’m sad to see the girls that have gone and, I just want to win.

“I just want to win and I want to do it our way and that’s something I pride myself on.”

City’s 2023/24 campaign ended in agony when we pipped to the WSL title by Chelsea on goal difference.

Greenwood says it was a painful but they are determined to go one better this season.

“Yeah, it stings bad,” she said. “I think, to lose a title  on goal-difference is, especially as a defender, with probably the best record in the league as well, it’s tough to take, definitely.

“To come down to, so close, the last two games of the season. But I think we have to put that on ourselves.

“You know, I think we have to look in the mirror first of all before we look at anyone else.

“I thought we were so good last year in so many ways. But, I think it’s so exciting that we were that good, but I still think we can be so much better.

“And that really excites me, because, you know, if you ask anyone, I think, everyone says that we play the best style of football but ultimately it’s about winning football matches.”
