“It’s always important to get a good start.

“Playing against a team that’s new in the league is always a challenge because I know they come with a lot of energy.

“It’s the first game, but at the same time we’re ready for that and the players are very excited to get started.”

The boss confirmed in his pre-match press conference that City will be without Vivianne Miedema, Rebecca Knaak and Niamh Charles for our WSL opener against Birmingham in his pre-match press conference.

He did, however, add that Jade Rose was in full training and Grace Clinton had also returned to the fold this week ahead of Sunday’s Joie Stadium clash.

Elsewhere, Beth Mead, Lauren Hemp and Mary Fowler were all praised for their attitude and application across pre-season suggesting they will be in the mix to feature.

Previous meeting

Birmingham are new to the WSL this campaign after finishing last term as champions of WSL2.

However, we did face them last season - in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw got an early goal that proved to be enough for the eventual tournament winners that day, but Birmingham made for very tricky foe at St Andrew’s.

Last time out

The last time City played competitively, we were completing an historic domestic double at Wembley.

We thrashed Brighton 4-0 in the FA Cup final to add to our Barclays Women’s Super League title and wrap up a dream of a debut campaign for boss Andrée Jeglertz.

City have obviously taken to the pitch throughout pre-season, with testing friendlies against Fiorentina, Arsenal, Barcelona and Manchester United in recent weeks.
