Form Guide

City go into our West Midlands clash in sparkling form, having won each of their last seven WSL matches, including victory in the Manchester Derby last time out.

Gareth Taylor’s side are also on a 10-game unbeaten run, stretching back to mid-October.

Birmingham City will hope to shake off any lingering cobwebs early on a Damson Park, having only played three times since the turn of the year because of postponements.

Team news

Keira Walsh is a potential doubt, according to manager Gareth Taylor.

The midfielder was ruled out of England’s 6-0 friendly victory over Northern Ireland on Tuesday through injury.

But Taylor remains hopeful that, even if she is unavailable for the trip to St George’s Park, it will not be for a prolonged period of time.

However, Taylor was able to provide some positive news on Walsh’s midfielder counterpart Sam Mewis, as she edges closer to a return.

The American has been out of action since sustaining an ankle injury while on international duty at the end of January, but the City boss added that she could make her return this weekend.

Gareth Taylor preview

“We have an eye on the bigger picture but it’s about giving maximum effort.

“We’re in a healthy position and that’s something that we’ve been able to do because of the effort the players have put in.

“I don’t see a change in mentality. Everyone looks up for the fight and we’re ready to put the effort in.

“I don’t want anyone not giving maximum effort with one eye on Fiorentina.”

Last Meeting

This is the first time the two sides have met in the current WSL campaign after the original clash was postponed in December.

Our last fixture against the Blues came in January 2020, with City picking up a hard-fought 2-0 win away from home.

Ellen White opening the scoring after just 34 seconds against her former club, before Keira Walsh added a second just after the hour with a beautiful curling effort.

It was Nick Cushing’s side a third win on the spin, and move us top of the WSL table in the process.

Last Time Out

It was derby delight for City in our last WSL match, with goals from Lucy Bronze, Lauren Hemp and a stunner from Caroline Weir handing us a 3-0 win over Manchester United at the Academy Stadium.

Bronze volleyed us into a 25th minute lead, before Lauren Hemp added some breathing space with the game approaching its final embers.

But the icing on top of the cake arrived with five to play, with Caroline Weir launching an exquisite chip from the edge of the box over United goalkeeper Mary Earps to add a third.

Stats

  • Birmingham were one of only two sides to take points off City when Nick Cushing’s side won the WSL title back in 2016. The West Midlands side picked up a 1-1 draw on the final day of the season.
  • After picking up three wins and three draws in our first nine WSL matches, Birmingham have lost all four of our most recent meetings, and failed to breach the City rearguard since September 2018.
  • City have found the net 12 times in our past three away fixtures in the WSL, winning all three against Everton, Brighton and Arsenal respectively.
  • City have avoided defeat in six of our last seven trips to Birmingham in all competitions, with that one blemish coming in February 2018.
