Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw’s early strike earned City a statement win in the Barclays Women’s Super League title race away to reigning champions Chelsea.

The Jamaican poked home the only goal of the game at Kingsmeadow after being threaded through by Jess Park on the counter attack.

It means Gareth Taylor’s side are now level on both points and goal difference with the league leaders, having stopped Chelsea’s remarkable record on home soil in the process.

Check out some of the stats to come from the victory below…

7 February 2021

That was the last time Chelsea had lost at Kingsmeadow in all competitions, until City became the first side to come away with three points in over three years.

The hosts had also boasted a 33-match unbeaten WSL home run before kick-off, but it was Gareth Taylor’s side who would ultimately end that sequence.

It meant Chelsea had to settle for matching the league’s longest-ever unbeaten home record, set by City between 2018 and 2021.

Shutout

Friday evening’s showdown pitted the WSL’s best attack against its sternest backline.

Something had to give, and it was City who continued our remarkable defensive record at Kingsmeadow.

Before the match, Chelsea had found the net at least once in 43 of their previous 44 league fixtures, but Gareth Taylor’s side held firm to claim a significant scalp.

Incredibly, the previous time Emma Hayes’ side had failed to score in that sequence was against City in last season’s clash at the Joie Stadium, where we ran out 2-0 winners.

Defensive diligence

As previously mentioned, despite a few late scares, Gareth Taylor’s side registered yet another clean sheet at Kingsmeadow.

It’s our fifth in a row in all competitions and continues a phenomenal record of having not conceded a single away goal so far in 2024.

Khiara Keating leads the way in terms of clean sheets in the WSL this season, with this her seventh shutout in fourteen appearances.

Indeed, City are the only side to have not reached double figures in terms of goals conceded, having been breached on just eight occasions so far in 2023/24.

Shaw-fire

While City’s defensive display will deservedly take the plaudits, it was Shaw’s early strike which proved the difference at Kingsmeadow.

The Jamaican is leading the race for the WSL golden boot with her tally now standing at 14 goals in just 13 appearances.

Her minutes per goal rate currently stands at a remarkable 70 minutes, equating to 1.28 per match.

Incredibly though, her strike at Kingsmeadow was Shaw’s first goal against Chelsea. What a moment to break your duck!
