Gemma Bonner’s early strike separated the sides at the Academy Stadium, extending the hosts’ impressive league form to six successive victories.
What happened
City headed into the clash – interim manager Alan Mahon’s first game in charge – with an impressive record against the Robins, winning nine of our last 11 meetings and bagging 30 goals; eight more than any other side.
Goal number 31 would arrive within two minutes of this encounter, as Caroline Weir whipped a pinpoint free-kick delivery into Bonner’s path and the defender executed a superb volleyed finish to secure the perfect start.
Bristol responded well to falling behind but struggled to really test Ellie Roebuck. Gemma Evans headed the visitors’ effort on target – but straight at the City shot-stopper – and heeding the warning, City stepped up.
Ellen White and Caroline Weir both went close: White twice intercepted with excellent last-ditch tackles and Weir watching two curling efforts well-saved, as the home side dominated the opening 45 minutes.
The league leaders continued where we left off after the break with Jill Scott and Bonner almost doubling the advantage inside a minute, forcing the best from Baggaley.
A steady stream of one-way traffic ensued for the remainder with the pacey Lauren Hemp linking up well with Keira Walsh down the left, and Georgia Stanway and Weir unfortunate not to find the net, as the Bristol backline held firm.
White went in search of her ninth of the campaign but again found Baggaley hard to beat from a narrow angle, but thankfully, one would prove enough as City’s title charge marches on…
What it means
City move to 39 points from 15 games – sitting top of the table; one point above Chelsea (who defeated Birmingham) and six ahead of third-placed Arsenal, who travel to Liverpool on Thursday night.
Team news
Mahon made just one change to the side which defeated Arsenal last time out, as Tessa Wullaert replaced Pauline Bremer.
Roebuck took her place in goal, shielded by a backline of Demi Stokes, Bonner, captain Steph Houghton and Stanway.
Weir and Walsh protected the back four, employed behind Hemp and Jill Scott, while Wullaert and the in-form White led the line upfront.
Player of the Match: Caroline Weir
Pulling the strings in midfield, the Scotland international - fresh from signing her new contract - produced a solid display.
