Deyna Castellanos says local derbies are among the most exciting fixtures in world football ahead of City’s meeting with Manchester United on Sunday.

Gareth Taylor’s side travel to Old Trafford in the Barclays Women’s Super League on 19 November, with kick-off scheduled for 16:30 (UK).

It represents the latest instalment of the enthralling fixture following Marc Skinner’s side’s promotion to the top flight in 2019 - with both teams harbouring ambitions to win the title this term.

The Venezuela international is no stranger to these types of fiercely contested clashes after tasting the Madrid derby with Atletico in 2021 before featuring in home and away Manchester derbies last term.

And the versatile midfielder is eagerly anticipating City’s meeting with Manchester United this weekend.

“We had a good start and were top of the league. There’s lots we need to improve on but it’s a long season and something that we know we’re capable of doing,” she explained.

“We’re just excited for the next game. It’s football, everything can happen and for us the next game is going to be so important.

“It’s going to be a lovely game, a derby and there’s nothing more exciting than playing in them.”

A summer signing from Atletico in 2022, the 24-year-old’s move to City represented her first taste of English football.

Castellanos went on to impressively play 28 games in her first term at the Joie Stadium and has made six outings so far this season after seamlessly adapting to life in the WSL.

Something, she explains, wouldn’t have been possible without the help of her ‘special’ teammates.

Castellanos added: “I’ve been in so many teams in the past and this team is something that’s very special.

“All of my team-mates are nice and for sure made us feel at home since the first day. That’s something very special.

“We communicate well, understand each other well and have mixed cultures, which can sometimes be a problem but it’s not. We embrace and learn form other cultures which is very exciting and very positive.”
