England were denied victory in their first game of the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup as Janine Beckie’s superb strike earned Canada a draw at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.

The Manchester City winger equalised with a brilliant 20-yard effort in the 55th minute after Millie Bright had opened the scoring for the hosts with a spectacular first half volley.

Beckie was one of five City players to start in the North East, where Alex Greenwood, Demi Stokes, Keira Walsh and Lauren Hemp were all named in Sarina Wiegman’s XI.

It was England who started the brighter, with Hemp the most dangerous player on the pitch in a first half in which she and Stokes linked up to great effect down the left flank.

The Lionesses superiority was rewarded when Canada goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan could only punch Greenwood’s cross as far as Bright, who expertly fired home from 15-yards in the 22nd minute and they might have doubled their lead, only for Hemp to fire wide from a promising position moments before the break.

Georgia Stanway was introduced at half-time, but Canada were much improved as the momentum shifted in the second period.

A misplaced pass allowed the reigning Olympic champions back into the game, with Ashley Lawrence seizing the opportunity and surging through midfield before picking out Jordyn Huitema, whose ball allowed Beckie to check inside and arrow a brilliant effort into the top corner.

Hemp stung the palms of Sheridan minutes later after being released by an excellent pass from Walsh, before England boss Wiegman began to ring the changes.

The winger was withdrawn alongside Greenwood on the 65-minute mark, when Lucy Bronze was introduced and, as England searched for a second, record goalscorer Ellen White was sent on in the closing stages.

Stanway went closest to finding a winner, but her 18-yard effort was straight at Sheridan as both sides settled for a point in a keenly fought contest.

The Arnold Clark Cup resumes on Sunday, when England face Spain and Canada take on Germany, with both games to be played at Norwich City’s Carrow Road.
