Spain have won the World Cup for the first time in their history after their 1-0 win over England in Australia.

The two nations were competing in the showpiece for the first time in their history, with a new champion set to earn the prestigious trophy after 90 minutes.

It was Spain who started the strongest as they looked to take an early lead against England.

City’s Lauren Hemp, however, had the best chance of the match in the opening 25 minutes as her effort shook the crossbar.

But four minutes later Olga Carmona’s pinpoint strike, which was the defining moment for Spain, gave them the lead in Sydney.

Sarina Wiegman’s side showed their relentless tenacity in the second half, with City star and substitute Chloe Kelly trying to link with her club team mate Lauren Hemp, as they searched for an equaliser.

And despite the 13 minutes of added time, England were unable to surpass a strong Spanish defensive line.
