Esme Morgan says she’s relishing the challenge of competing on multiple fronts during the second half of the 2023/24 season.

After 10 Barclays Women’s Super League matches this term, City currently sit second in the table and only three points behind leaders, Chelsea.

In an enthralling campaign so far, no team have stolen a march for the WSL crown with title rivals entertainingly taking points from one another.

For example, Gareth Taylor’s side produced a phenomenal display to beat Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford in November after earning a fearless point against Emma Hayes’ side after being reduced to nine players in our second league assignment.

What’s more, the Blues are firmly in the hunt for Continental Cup knockout qualification and we begin our FA Cup quest with a trip to Durham in January.

And Morgan believes there will be plenty of twists and turns before the curtain falls on the season.

“I’ve got a good feeling. The WSL is so unpredictable this year,” she explained.

“It’s such an unpredictable league and really tight at the top, we’re second now three points off top spot so we’re well within touching distance.

“We’re also looking forward to the FA Cup starting in the new year as well as finishing the Continental Cup groups.

“Hopefully in a few months we’ll still be firing on all cylinders in all competitions.”

City closed 2023 with a superb 4-1 win over Everton on Merseyside in December which signalled the start of a four-week winter break until our next outing.

Following a relentless schedule after the historic 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand concluded in August, Morgan believes the pause in play has come at the right time.

She added: “We get a few days off then we’re back in ticking over. Coming back in January there’s a risk of injury if we just have two weeks completely resting.

“There’s definitely an element of training, pitch sessions and gym work to keep us ticking over. We’ve always had a Christmas break so to us it’s normal.

“Coming off the back of the World Cup we didn’t really have a break over the summer, then we came straight into the season. I think just mentally being able to switch off football for a few days is needed.”
