For lifelong City fan Esme Morgan, Sundays don't get much better than being selected as captain and leading your Club to a Barclays Women's Super League victory.

The 22-year-old was handed the armband for the first time by Gareth Taylor for the 3-0 victory over Reading to write the latest chapter in an impressive season that has already seen her make her international debut.

Morgan played in central defence for a City side that dominated the ball as two Emma Makundi own goals and Bunny Shaw’s seventh of the season sealed a win at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Coming from a family of City fans and having graduated from the Club’s Academy, there are few bigger honours for Morgan than being chosen to lead the side.

“It felt really special,” she said after the match.

“I saw my parents after the game and my mum said my nana would be so proud. I thought she was going to make me cry.

“My family are all such big blues so to represent the Club every week let alone be captain is incredible. Today was really special and I’m really grateful that Gareth selected me.”

The young defender has been a rock at the back for City so far this season after missing much of the last campaign through injury.

Looking back on how much has changed for her in a short space of time, she said: “My life the last year has been an absolute rollercoaster but I knew there would a time when I could come back stronger. I feel so comfortable in myself at the the minute.”

City were dominant all afternoon against a Reading side that are struggling towards the bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Despite a goalless first half, Morgan says the players never considered that they wouldn’t return to Manchester with the three points.

“It felt like such a comfortable performance,” she stated.

“I feel like we dominated from start to finish. At half-time we said we need to be clinical, we need to be ruthless and take the opportunities that we have got.

“In the second half we managed to do that. Obviously it was two own goals but our play deserved it.”

City stay in fourth but the victory means we pile the pressure on Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea ahead of us.

After four consecutive league victories, Morgan believes the Blues are hitting our stride and can look towards catching the sides above us.

In summary, she said: “The atmosphere in the team is so good. The league is so competitive and everyone is taking points off each other so we just have to keep taking care of what we can and hopefully we can start working our way to the top.”
