The 2019 World Cup winner has hung up her boots following rehabilitation from a serious knee injury first sustained in 2017.
In a sparkling career which saw her collect a swathe of major honours and individual accolades, the 31-year-old spent the entirety of the 2020/21 season at the Joie Stadium.
During her time at the Club, she made 32 appearances for Gareth Taylor’s side and scored a staggering 16 goals – resulting in a ratio of one every other game.
Perhaps her most famous strike in sky blue came in the 2019/20 FA Cup Final when she broke the deadlock against Everton in the showpiece.
Mewis opened the scoring when she lost her marker to powerfully head home Alex Greenwood’s corner - helping us to a 3-1 victory and our third success in the prestigious tournament.
Due to her classy performances for City during the 2020/21 Barclays Women’s Super League campaign, the midfielder was named in the 2021 PFA Team of the Year and was also voted as the Best Women’s Player in a poll conducted by ESPN FC in March 2021.
Taking to social media, she penned: “With both sadness and clarity, I am retiring from professional soccer. Unfortunately, my knee can no longer tolerate the impact that elite soccer requires.
“Though this isn’t what I wanted, it’s clear that this is the only path forward for me.
“I want to thank everyone who has been on my team throughout this journey - soccer has put so many wonderful things in my life, but the most wonderful thing has been the people.
“To all of my family, friends, teammates, and fans - I truly feel that we did this together and I’m extremely grateful.
“I plan to share more about the journey of my injury someday. I know that there are many athletes who have faced the unique struggle of stepping away from sport early and I think these stories deserve to be told - and heard.
“But in the meantime, even in great disappointment, there are silver linings.
“Today, I am excited to announce that l’ll be joining the Men in Blazers Media Network to lead women’s soccer coverage.
“The Women’s Game will follow American, European, and international soccer. This is an amazing opportunity for me and one that I feel extremely grateful to have been presented with at such a pivotal moment in my life.
“My sincerest thanks to you all and I’ll see you soon!”
Everyone at Manchester City wishes Sam the best of luck in her retirement.
