Gareth Taylor says he’s still unsure if Alex Greenwood will be fit to face Brighton on Sunday.

Greenwood suffered a head injury during the recent international break and has had to sit out our meetings with Arsenal and Liverpool in the last week.

We welcome Brighton to the Joie Stadium for a 13:00 (UK) kick-off on Sunday and fans can watch the match live on CITY+.

Ahead of that one, Taylor gave an update on the central defender.

“Alex has been assessed, it’s a daily one,” he said in Friday’s pre-match press conference.

City v Brighton | Match preview

“We’ll know a little bit more tomorrow but it’s quite tight for the weekend.

“She’s out on the pitch but limited in the aerial things she can do. We’ll know more in 24 hours.

“When there’s a doubt there’s no doubt for me. It’s wise to be sensible with that type of injury.”

The boss was encouraged by Demi Stokes’ return to the matchday squad for the midweek Continental Cup victory at Liverpool.

“Demi was back on the bench on Wednesday night and it’s great to have her back” he stated.

Taylor was also very complimentary about this weekend’s opponents, who sit in ninth in the Barclays Women’s Super League after five games.

Melissa Phillips’ side will take confidence however from last week’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United when only a 98th minute equaliser denied them all three points.

“Aggressive in moments, sometimes they can sit off also like they did against Chelsea and United. They are mixed in what they did,” said Taylor about Brighton’s tactics.

“They made it difficult for United and nearly held on for an impressive three points.

“They have a new coach in there and new players, we know Vicky well and they have a few new signings and made a decent start to the season.

“It’s a good game for us to have and one we’re looking forward to on home soil.”

City have an excellent record against the south coast side, winning five and drawing one of our last six Women’s Super League meetings with them.

Taylor isn’t allowing that recent head-to-head form affect preparation for Sunday.

“Of course it’s nice to have that record but it doesn’t count for much. We have to go out and earn our stripes,” he said.

“We don’t rest on our laurels, we make sure we’re highly competitive and ready to hopefully dominate as much as we possibly can.”
