Gareth Taylor says his team won’t do anything ‘amazingly different’ in Wednesday’s Continental Cup clash with Everton.

City head into the Toffees game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the Joie Stadium, which saw two red cards for the sky blues.

Alex Greenwood and Lauren Hemp were both dismissed but City still managed to secure a hard-fought point against the champions.

Taylor insists the game was simply ‘an anomaly’ and instead of focusing on the discussion surrounding those decisions, the boss preferred to praise his players for coping admirably with the numerical disadvantage against Emma Hayes’s side.

On the team’s approach to the cup clash this midweek, he said: “We have to play the game. I don’t think I’ll be telling the players to do anything amazingly different from what we’ve seen previously.

“Everyone will have seen most of those cautions that went against us and obviously the West Ham one as well that we did actually appeal and we were very disappointed it wasn’t downgraded because it was very soft.

“I’ve been super impressed with the players, that’s the one thing I would say, the way we managed that game under difficult circumstances.

“I don’t think there was any ill-discipline from us at all, I think it was a real anomaly of a game in that respect.

“It forced us into a really, really difficult situation which the players coped with so, so well.

“Even in that type of example of being down to less players, in those last two games I’ve been so, so impressed with the players and how we’ve managed it.

“To put four points on the board when losing players has been amazing.”

Taylor believes City must be ‘pretty flawless’ in the Continental Cup this season due to the fact that only the first-place team in each of the five groups – split into a northern and southern section - progress automatically into the knockout phases.

Our campaign begins tomorrow, with a 19:00 (UK) kick-off at Walton Hall Park, with the match being shown live on CITY+.

“I think this competition is important to us, we won it two seasons ago, it was my second trophy I won here,” added Taylor.

“I think it’s a great competition and a really tough competition as you have to be pretty flawless in the group stages because there’s only one team that’s guaranteed.

“We’ve found ourselves in a group that could also include potentially Man Utd if they don’t progress in the Champions League so you’re talking about an all WSL cup competition whereas some of the other groups look a little bit like a Championship group.

“So it’s a tough group, really tough, you’ve got to be pretty faultless in it and win as many games and put as many points on the board as you possibly can because, as I say, there’s only one team who’s guaranteed to go through with the second best placed over the country.

“It’s a really good competition and not something to be sniffed at. We’ve had good success in it over the years and also in the FA Cup.

“We’re really clear on what we want to do this season in winning the WSL but winning trophies, we’ll never get tired of that.”
