Gareth Taylor admits his side didn’t hit our usual standards in City’s 2-1 Barclays Women’s Super League defeat to Liverpool.

Goals in either half from Natasha Dowie and Missy Bo Kearns handed maximum points at Prenton Park, cancelling our Lauren Hemp’s looping header.

City never gave in and fought until the final whistle for the equaliser, with Hemp striking the underside of the crossbar late on, but it was to no avail.

Reflecting on the result, Taylor accepted that his side were a little off colour, but insists the sole focus is now on claiming maximum points in our final two fixtures.

“We never want to lose a game. We were just off it a bit today,” he said.

“We started well but then gave away a poor for the goal which is unlike us.

“We fought back and did well in scoring and I felt we’d have good opportunities to improve on that and we did.

“But we gave away a soft one, then you’re chasing.

“It’s about holding your nerve, we know there’s only so many places for the Champions League.

“We’re still not out of it yet, there could still be a bit of movement. We just have to go and win our last two games, it’s a simple as that.

“Nerves are understandable, but we could still have controlled the play a little better than we did today.”

The boss also gave credit to Liverpool, who made it five home wins in their last six WSL matches with victory.

The hosts defended doggedly throughout proceedings, particularly in the latter stages after regaining the lead after the breakthrough Kearns’ clinical finish.

Matt Beard’s side have taken some notable scalps on their return to the WSL, including Chelsea on the opening day of the season, and Taylor praised their determined display.

He added: “Liverpool are a good team at holding onto leads.

“When they went 2-1 up with their tails up and were defending the box well, I think anyone would struggle to defend against that.

“We created some things but probably not as much as we’d have liked. They battled and defended the goal really well.”
