Manager Gareth Taylor hailed a derby brace from Jess Park as ‘the cherry on the cake’ after the England midfielder helped inspire City to an emphatic 3-1 Etihad derby win over Manchester United.

Park rounded off another magnificent all-round display by securing a first half double to register her first WSL goals for City as well as also providing a brilliant second half assist for Bunny Shaw which saw the striker become the Club’s all-time leading scorer.

In front of a crowd of 40,086 and against our fiercest rivals, it was the latest reminder of the 22-year-old’s eye-catching all-round quality.

And reflecting on both Park’s individual display and City’s relentless chase for the title as a whole after a win that sent City back to the top of the WSL table, Taylor couldn’t disguise his excitement and admiration.

“[Her performance was] Really good. The kind of cherry on the cake with Jess is goals and assists and she gave us that on a big stage,” the City boss asserted.

“The performance was good, she gives us a lot of energy and quality.

“Also her pick out for Bunny was special. There was still a lot for Bunny to do but she did it against a very good keeper in Mary.

“Jess has stepped up to the opportunity really well. When you think about how patient she’s had to be, she’s done well in that space.”

What was a third derby win of the season against United also chalked up an 11th straight WSL triumph and fired City back to the top of the WSL table, for 24 hours at least.

Second -placed Chelsea play on Sunday when they visit West Ham, but regardless of the outcome of that encounter, Taylor believes an enthralling title race is destined to go to the very last day of the season.

“WSL title always go to the final day and I don’t see anything different this season,” Taylor asserted.

“It’s another three points - and a big three points - and we move to the next one. The margins are tight and I don’t see that changing.

“Full credit to the group, it’s taken a lot of hard work and trust [and] we’re there now.

“The most important thing now is that we’re top, and things will invariably change tomorrow.

“It’s not to worry too much, we just have to control what we can. That’s what this week and last week was about.

“It’s a derby and we want to be successful, fortunately we have been. You put so much energy into the performance, it’s probably only 24 hours after you see it’s amazing.

“I’m really pleased. We’re making good steps - the girls have done really well.”
