Stunning first half strikes from Filippa Angeldahl and Lauren Hemp helped the hosts move up to second in the table, level on points with league leaders Manchester United.
With just two points separating the sides ahead of kick-off, the City boss hadn’t shied away from discussing the potential significance of the fixture in his pre-match press conference.
But Taylor was impressed with how his players handled the pressure of what could be a hugely important win in the context of our WSL title push.
“Sometimes when you say things people take a soundbite and it puts pressure on you,” he explained following the win.
“But what I did say was I think Chelsea will win the title if we don’t win today, that’s not to say they still won’t but if we lost today, it’d be five points with a game in hand, that’s too much.
“What it’s done is really open it [the title race] up.
“The girls were under no illusions today, we spoke all week about having to win this game and fair play to them, they went out with tenacious pressing and scored some quality goals.
“They deserve huge credit.”
City’s unbeaten run now stands at 14 league matches, with September’s 2-0 reverse at Chelsea the last time we tasted defeat in the WSL.
And while the boss agrees that our triumph over Chelsea has sent a message to our title rivals, he insists that there’s still plenty of work to be done between now and the end of the season.
He said: “Of course it does [send a message], but we were doing good things anyway.
“To get to the position we are after losing the first two of the season is pretty remarkable and the players need to take credit for that
“We’re a new team with quite a lot of new players coming into our system so to be in this position from where we were is top.
“[But] we’ve not done anything yet, there’s still really important games to come, lots of challenges in front of us but we go into it with high levels of confidence.”
