Gareth Taylor expressed his delight for Filippa Angeldahl after the Swede scored a dramatic late winner in City’s 1-0 Continental Cup victory over Leicester.

With the tie looking increasingly likely to end goalless and force penalties, the midfielder ghosted into the box to fire home Lauren Hemp’s inviting cross on the cusp of full-time.

The strike represents the 25-year-old’s second goal this term as the midfielder made the most of her opportunity in the engine room.

And the boss believes Angeldahl deserved her heroic moment at a chilly Pirelli Stadium.

“Yeah I was pleased. I was really pleased for Filippa, I think she deserved that [goal]. She had a couple of chances before that,” he said.

“It was probably the one moment of quality in the final third.

“We huffed and puffed tonight, we didn’t give the best version of ourselves tonight but fair play to Leicester – they worked tremendously hard and the pitch was difficult.

“I just spoke to the girls in there and [I said] ball speed is not always key.

“Sometimes you need a bit more craft in our play. I think making some of the changes we did I thought added a bit more quality.

“Yui makes a difference, so does Esme and Lauren – who produced a great pick out for Filippa.”

The victory over the Foxes confirmed our position as Group B winners – setting a up a last-eight tie with Bristol City.

Not only did the success over Willie Kirk’s side maintain our 100 percent record in the League Cup, but it also extended our unbeaten run to 12 games.

And Taylor is relishing the prospect of knockout football at the Robins High Performance Centre on Wednesday 25 January.

He added: “I’m pleased [with topping the group]. Of course, it’s a trophy we take seriously and we’re the holders.

“It’s great now, we were anticipating and knew we had work to do in this game.

“We felt we were in a good position to anticipate a game next week against Bristol City. A bit closer than Lewes!

“We were planning for that in our schedule without being presumptuous and we’re now looking forward to the quarter-finals.”
