Gareth Taylor says Lauren Hemp is 'close' to a return ahead of City's Barclays Women's Super League clash with Brighton.

The winger has been ruled out of action since picking up a thigh complaint in our 3-0 victory over Reading at the beginning of November.

Taylor explained the following week that the England international could return in time for next Sunday’s Manchester derby, having undergone a scan to learn the full extent of the injury.

Asked for an update on the Hemp’s condition ahead of the weekend, the boss revealed that she had returned to training earlier this week.

“Lauren’s close, she’s been back training with us the last couple of days so we’ll give her another 24 hours,” Taylor explained.

“The temptation is to want to have these players back, it’s the same with Vicky [Losada], just getting them closer.

“I think hopefully over this next period we’ll see a couple coming back, but outside of that everyone’s in fairly good shape and there’s a good feeling as well.”

The boss was also asked for his thoughts on the current demands that are placed on international footballers during a busy period of matches.

With the European Championships taking place ahead of the latest campaign, 12 months after the Olympic Games, extended breaks have been few and far between in Women’s football.

Taylor expects that this issue will be addressed, while also explaining that it’s important to assess each players’ condition on a case-by-case basis.

He said: “It’s certainly something I’d imagine is being looked at.

“There’s a real high demand on all players, and trying to create robust platers for the demands that are set is really hard, and getting the balance right of wanting to give some time away and rest but also making sure they’re physically capable.

“It’s a hot topic at the moment, as to where the solutions lie, we try to look at the individual rather than in brackets.

“Lauren [Hemp] will be different to Kerstin Casparij in what they need to recover, some need more time. We look at it on an individual basis.”
