The forward is one away from equalling Nikita Parris’ current best of 62, following her impressive double against Aston Villa on Saturday.
The brace marked Stanway’s fifth and sixth goals in her last five games and the 23-year-old (who has featured in a variety of positions over the last few seasons) says she is targeting top spot in the scoring charts to create more history with the Club.
“I’m in a good place,” she smiled. “I’ve been playing well and I’ve had quite a lot of minutes in different positions, trying to make the most of the situations.
“I’m one off Keets’ scoring record and that’s something I’m aiming to do from now to the end of the season.
“I have so much respect for Keets. I’ve been here for six years now and it’s about time I got a little record in the history books!
“It’s a very exciting opportunity for me and hopefully, I can get the job done before the end of the season.
“It’s a matter of trying to do that for myself individually but also for the team so we can get as many points as we can.”
Reflecting on the triumph at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium, Stanway hailed the dominant efforts of her teammates and highlighted the importance of an early goal, as she struck a deflected effort with just five minutes played.
“It was exciting,” she continued. “We had a lot of the ball so it was just a matter of being patient, trying to break down and create chances to finish off.
“It’s always important to try and get a goal as soon as possible so you can try to put yourself at ease, relax and settle into the game more.
“We had loads of possession so it was just a matter of trying to break down, get in the pockets, moving and trying different things.
“The league is still potentially up for grabs and we’ll do the best we can to get as many points as we can.
“Towards the end of last year, before Christmas, we were a little bit disappointed to have games cancelled but that made us hungrier coming into the New Year.
“We had a break to go away and work on things individually and get into the right frame of mind to carry on the season.
“This week has put us in good stead with three wins: maximum points with loads of goals scored and loads of possession.
“Hopefully, we’ll carry that into the rest of the season.”
City have little time to celebrate the hat-trick of wins with a Continental Cup quarter-final and crunch FA Women’s Super League clash against Arsenal next week.
Stanway admits that City’s start to the campaign has fuelled a desire to set things straight, especially against the Gunners.
“It’s a massive week,” she added. “We took a defeat to Arsenal at the start of the season and that’s something we want to put right and we’ll try to get the best out of that opportunity.
“We’ll focus on this week and do the work on the grass to put ourselves in the best possible position for the result we want.”
