The England international – who initially made the move to the Academy Stadium in September 2020 - will now remain a City player until the summer of 2026 after putting pen to paper on a new deal.
One of the WSL’s longest standing figures, boasting spells with Everton, Notts County, Liverpool and Manchester United on her CV alongside a trophy-filled stint with Lyon, the 29-year-old has been a stalwart for Gareth Taylor’s side over the past two-and-a-half seasons.
Racking up 80 appearances in all competitions and captaining the side on numerous occasions, the defender has also found the back of the net five times during her time here so far.
A UEFA Women’s European Championships winner with England this past summer, Greenwood will mark the end of a memorable year for herself by committing her future to Manchester City with a three-year extension to her current contract.

Speaking after signing on the dotted line, Greenwood said: “I’m really pleased to have my new deal sorted and it’s come at the perfect time – after a strong first half to the season, I can now just focus on the remainder of the campaign and the next three years.
“Feeling settled at a club for me is so important and I absolutely have that here at City, which is why I’ve signed such a long-term deal - I just love being here.
“I have a really good relationship with Gareth [Taylor] – we’ve worked together throughout my whole time here so far – and the way he wants us to play marries up exactly with how I want to personally, so it’s the perfect match for me.
“I hold myself to such high standards on a personal level, and I will go out and give 100% in every single game I play for this football club which I hope has been clear to see over the past two-and-a-half years.

City’s unsung hero
It’s often said that you gauge a true measure of a person’s character when they are faced with adversity, and that statement certainly rings true for Alex Greenwood.
When an unprecedented injury crisis ravaged Gareth Taylor’s side in the opening months of the 2021/22 campaign, it was City’s number five, in just her second season at the Club, who stepped up to the plate.
The defender was the only member of the squad to feature in every match of the campaign as we won the Continental Cup for a fourth time in our history and reached the FA Cup final.
But while Greenwood offered a commanding presence at the heart of a City defence which shipped just four league goals after the turn of the year, her contribution to the team transcended her ability to keep the ball out of the net.
Indeed, across her 38 appearances in all competitions, the England international grabbed five goals and five assists.

The only members of the City squad able to better that goal contributions tally were Caroline Weir, Georgia Stanway, Lauren Hemp, Ellen White and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw.
Joining from Olympique Lyonnais – the dominant force of Women’s football at the time – Greenwood arrived at the Academy Stadium in the summer of 2020 hoping to bring similar success to City.
She set to task straight away, providing an assist from Sam Mewis as Gareth Taylor claimed his first trophy as City manager with a 3-1 FA Cup final win over Everton in November of that year.
Deployed at both left-back and centre-half in her opening season, Greenwood’s positional intelligence and versatility were essential as we reached our highest ever points total in the WSL across 2020/21.
And the defender, despite the difficulties presented by an unprecedented injury crisis, continued her upward trajectory in her second full campaign at the Academy Stadium, being named in the WSL Team of the Season alongside City team-mates Weir and Hemp.
It was just rewards for a player who, never one to enjoy the limelight, often goes under the radar despite a remarkable defensive consistency and potent attacking threat.
Extending her stay at the Club until 2026, the ‘unsung hero’ has certainly got the recognition she deserves.
