Lauren Hemp scored on her 50th appearance as England kept up their hopes of reaching the Nations League finals with a stunning 3-2 fightback against the Netherlands.

The winger was one of six City stars to play in the Wembley thriller along with England team-mates Alex Greenwood, Chloe Kelly and Esme Morgan while Jill Roord and Kerstin Casparij featured for the Dutch.

The Lionesses needed to win to have any chance of winning their group but found themselves 2-0 down at half-time after a double from Dutch striker Lineth Beerensteyn.

Former City midfielder Georgia Stanway pulled a goal back in the 58th minute with a neat header before Hemp equalised two minutes later with a precision strike from the edge of the box off the inside of the post.

England snatched an injury time winner through Ella Toone and chased a fourth goal that would have seen them take charge of Group A1.

But Casparij made a fabulous clearance as Hemp looked like scoring while Morgan made a crucial tackle to halt a Dutch breakaway.

The Netherlands remain top on goal difference but England moved up to second behind after Belgium were held 1-1 at home by Scotland.

And City’s Dutch and English contingent can be grateful to teammate Sandy MacIver who made a couple of important saves in Leuven.

England face Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday needing to win with a swing in goal difference unless the Netherlands fail to win.

World Champions Spain have qualified for the finals despite losing 3-2 at home to Italy.

Laia Aleixandri started in the heart of defence as Spain’s 100% record came to an end in Pontevedra.

However, they qualified when Sweden failed to win in Switzerland, meaning they top Group A4.

Filippa Angeldal started for Sweden who had 28 attempts in a 1-0 defeat in Lucerne.
