Keira Walsh says Ellen White’s workrate is unrivalled, as the forward edges closer to another goalscoring record.

The City duo have started both games of the Lionesses’ Women’s World Cup tournament with White bagging a brace in Monday’s sensational 8-0 win over Norway to close in on Wayne Rooney’s all-time high tally for England.

Now one goal shy of equalling the feat, many have tipped White, who became the Lionesses’ top goalscorer last November, to make history once more.

Walsh says her Club and national teammate would deserve no less for her drive, commitment and professionalism.

Asked whether she tips her compatriot to break the record, Walsh smiled: “Hopefully!

“If she breaks the record, I imagine we’ll go pretty far in the tournament so fingers crossed.

“Ellen is a very competitive person, which you can probably see in the way she plays. She’s very professional and she never leaves any stone unturned.

“She does everything right to be in the best possible shape on the pitch. As a player, her goalscoring record speaks for itself.

“She’s added a little bit to her game in the past few seasons at City - she comes short and links up play a little bit more.

“That’s something she doesn’t naturally get a lot of credit for. She does a lot of work that goes unnoticed.

“Off the ball, she’s great at pressing and she’s got an unmatched workrate in my opinion. At City, that’s something that starts us off on the front foot.”

England’s impressive eight-goal haul against Norway issued a strong statement of the tournament hosts’ intent, sparking interest and encouragement across the country.

Walsh herself earned plenty of deserved acclaim for her influential displays but ever grounded, insists her side are fully focused on the task at hand: producing the best level of performance to ensure the best chance of silverware and inspire the next generation.

“For us, the most important role that we’ve got is that we want to make the nation proud and we want to inspire those young girls,” she added.

“That’s the journey that we’ve been on as this England team and that’s what we’re hoping to do, even regardless of the results.

Each team brings something different and we’ve got to respect that. Ultimately for us, we’ve got to take it a game at a time and we do want to put on a good performance in every game and put on an exciting match for the fans.

“The bigger picture is to keep inspiring the younger generation and we want the fans of the nation to be watching this and be proud of the performance the Lionesses are putting in.

“To see those young girls, who are going to be inspired to take up football and continue the journey that we’re on, is amazing. Hopefully, we can leave it in a better place for the next generation.”
