Keira Walsh has joked she has mixed feelings about walking out at Old Trafford tonight!

The midfielder is readying herself for action as England host Austria in the eagerly-anticipated opening game of the Women’s Euros, which will be contested in front of a sell-out crowd at Manchester United’s home ground.

A lifelong City fan, the Lionesses star teased she wishes she was gracing the stadium in her City kit, adding it would not be a bad time to open her international scoring account!

“I’d have rather played at the Etihad,” she laughed. “But in all seriousness, it’s an iconic stadium.

“I can’t stand here and say it’s not. It’s a great stadium to play on.

“To have a home opener played in front of a sold out crowd, it’s amazing. Do I wish it was a City badge I’d be walking out? Probably… but I’m looking forward to it.”

“I’m not sure how I’d feel about scoring my first goal for England at Old Trafford… but a home opener wouldn’t be a bad time to get on the scoresheet!”

Walsh also said the squad are in excellent spirits ahead of the game and with a seven-strong City contingent in the ranks, says relationships are blossoming in all positions.

“There’s a real feeling of excitement,” she added. “There are a lot of positive vibes around the camp.

“Confidence is really good. Sarina [Wiegman] is really good at that – she wants us to enjoy football and play an attractive style, which suits a lot of the players here who play a similar style.

“It’s like at City – get the ball down and keep possession – which is familiar to a lot of us. The past few weeks have been about building connections.

“It’s really important [to have a strong City contingent]. Knowing we’re all on the same page and knowing what each other is going to do – and there are a lot of unspoken connections – suits us with the way we want to play and gives us a headstart in that sense.

“For us, it’s about getting out on the grass, enjoying the ball and building on that.”
